GungalTM of the Day
GungalTM Raquel Welch wields her lever-action...

Today is the first of September. September (from the Latin for 'seventh') was originally the seventh month in the Roman calendar. It's a common misconception that it was edged out by July (in honor of the deified Julius Caesar) and August (in honor of Caesar's adopted son, eventual successor, and the first Roman Emperor, Augustus). In fact, according to the wikipedia article on the origin of September, it was in 153 BC that September was displaced by the addition of Kalendas Januarius as the new first month: "September was in fact the seventh month of the Roman calendaruntil 153 BC, when the first month changed from Kalendas Martius (1 March) to Kalendas Januarius (1 January)".

September is an especially meaningful month for me, as it contains a host of anniversaries. I enlisted in the Army on September 13th, 1985 (a Friday, coincidentally), and my birthday is the 28th. A lot of friends' birthdays in September, too. An old friend of mine, Bethann, celebrates her birthday on 10 September. My old work mate Jerry, God bless him, celebrates his birthday on 11 September.

Of course, this year on 11 September, we commemorate a much darker day, also: The tenth anniversary of the terrorist attack on The Twin Towers in New York City in 2001. It's hard to believe an entire decade, filled with a struggle against a determined enemy hard to pin down and definitively defeat, has passed since all those lives were snuffed out. We may not see that war end in our lifetime, but we earnestly pray that it will...

 Moving on...
